Your Pup Misses You: What a Day Alone Does to Your Dog

Updated: Jul 21, 2022

Dogs hate being left alone. They may not show it, but they do. Studies have reported that in the absence of a human companion, separation-related behaviors (SRBs) such as barking, howling, household destruction, pacing, and toileting occur. SRBs could affect around 70 million dogs in the United States and Europe over the course of their lives.

A day alone can be really tough on your pup.

First, they'll spend a good chunk of the day searching for you. They'll wander from room to room, looking for any sign of you. When they can't find you, they'll likely lay down and wait. And they'll wait, and wait, and wait some more.

This waiting can be really tough on your dogs. They may not understand why you're gone or when you'll be back. This can lead to anxiety and stress.

And that's not all. A day alone can also be boring. It leads to restlessness or owner searching, hypervigilance, panting, and/or extreme passivity. Other negative emotional states connected with different forms of SRBs include frustration, fear, panic, and boredom. According to recent surveys, 20-40% of dogs presenting to behavior clinics are diagnosed with "separation anxiety." Dogs are social creatures. They need companionship to be happy.

When left alone, they can experience a wide range of negative emotions, from boredom and loneliness to anxiety and fear. This can lead to a host of physical problems, including digestive issues, weight gain, and behavior problems. In extreme cases, dogs may even develop self-destructive habits like chewing or barking excessively. While it's important to give your dog some independence, it's equally important to make sure they have plenty of time to interact with you.

So, what can you do to make sure your dog has a good day while you're gone? First, try not to leave them alone for too long. If you can, arrange for someone to check in on them or take them for a walk while you're away (and make sure they're not making things worse).

You can also give them some toys to keep them occupied. Kongs filled with treats are a great option. Or, you can get a dog puzzle toy to give their brain a workout.

Finally, make sure you give your dog plenty of attention when you're home. Take them for a walk, play some games, and just spend some quality time with them. This will help them feel loved and appreciated, and it will make the time you're away from them a little easier to bear.

There are a number of ways to combat anxiety problems, such as hiring a dog walker or pet sitter, or taking your dog to doggy daycare. If you work long hours and cannot commit to regular walks or playtime, you can hire my dog walking/sitting service.
